Aril Brikha - Ex Machina

June 19, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments

Aril Brikha - Ex Machina‘Deeparture…’ was released on Derrick May’s Transmat label in 2001, following up from his ‘Art Of Vengeance EP’ in 1998 which spawned the club monster ‘Groove La Chord’, a tune which hasn’t run out of steam even in 2007. Since then the Swedish producer has been quiet on the record front, putting out a handful of EPs on Kompakt, Poker Flat and Music Man, prefering instead to concentrate on his live show in clubs. But the release drought is over: this month Brihka follows up ‘Deeparture…’ with a spanking new eleven-track album released on UK label Peacefrog.

Piracy more serious than burglary, fraud, bank robbery

June 16, 2007 | Filed Under General Info, Tech Zone | No Comments

For the more than nine years that Ars Technica has been publishing online, we’ve been outspoken when it comes to the lack of balance between the threat of piracy (which is always overstated) and the “solutions” to piracy (which are often draconian) that some copyright holders demand. Whether it’s laws that would turn the possession of software into a crime, completely baked piracy reports, or yet another law meant to criminalize civil infractions, we’ve cast a critical eye on an industry that defines solipsism.

Their debut album ‘Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release’ arrives next month. Simian Mobile Disco are Jas Shaw and James Ford, the synths and electronics of former indie band Simian, whose ‘Never Be Alone’ you’ll definitely know as ‘We are Your Friends’ reworked by Justice. These days, however, the pair are best known for making ravey house and electro as DJs and producers - Ford produced the debut album from day-glo kiddies the Klaxons.

10 Years of International Deejay Gigolos

June 11, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments

10 Years of International Deejay GigolosFounded in 1996, DJ Hell’s label Gigolo Records has always had its ear to the ground – the label put out early records by big names from Miss Kittin to Justice. Each summer Hell puts out a two CD unmixed compilation aiming at showcasing what’s landed in his inbox – this year’s effort ‘International Deejay Gigolos CD Ten’ features acts which will be new to most: names such as Woody, Arbotique, Voltique or Rebecca Von Kalinowsky. But it’s not all uncharted territory – Hell includes cuts from Gigolo regulars Mount Sims, The Presets and Oliver Huntemann, as well as an update of Steve “Silk” Hurley’s ‘Jack Your Body’ by Jamie Anderson and Jesse Rose. Hell obsessives will also be interested to check the previously unreleased Hell remix of Human Resource’s ’91 hardcore anthem ‘Dominator’, which completes the package.

Guy Gerber - Late Bloomers

June 9, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments

Guy Gerber - Late BloomersGuy Gerber started out making progressive house in 2002, but in 2004 he did something special: he made the genre new again with his hit ‘Stoppage Time’, a pitch-shifted peaktimer that scored big amongst the techno crowd a year later. Sven Vath, Kiki and Holden couldn’t get enough of it, so much so that Vath signed Guy Gerber to his Cocoon label in 2006, where he released ‘Sea of Sand’, a minimal-prog hybrid that bridged the boundaries between the genres like no other. Now he’s giving us his new LP - Late Bloomers.

Chris Fortier - As Long As The Moment ExistsFormer progressive house producer Chris Fortier reveals a new direction on his debut album. As Long As The Moment Exists arrives in June. Chris Fortier was one of America’s prog figureheads in the late nineties and early noughties, releasing mix albums and 12″s on labels such as Bedrock and his own label Fade. But two years ago, Fortier surprised fans by revealing a new musical agenda on his mix CD ‘Balance 007′, bringing together René Breitbarth, D.Diggler and Mathew Jonson for a more techno-oriented take on dance music. As a producer, recently Fortier has been releasing tech house under the stealth alias 40oz, handing in rerubs of everyone from !!! to Alexkid to Alexi Delano. Look out for further surprises next month when he drops his first longplayer.
