Karotte’s Kitchen Vol. 1
May 31, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
German DJ and party animal Karotte releases a new mix, ‘Karotte’s Kitchen Vol. 1’ this summer. Karotte has held down residencies at clubs such as U60311 and Cocoon in Frankfurt and Harry Klein in Munich (for whom he mixed ‘Flokati House’ in 2005 with Matthias Tanzmann). He’s also the mind behind the radio ‘Karotte’s Kitchen’ on Sunshine Live in Mannheim, which adds chat and gossip to the usual beat-driven dance radio show formula. Karotte’s debut mix for Alphabet City is named after the radio show, and concentrates on a similar blend of minimal and electro.

Spooky are best known for the early nineties album ‘Gargantuan’ and its big singles ‘Little Bullet’ and ‘Schmoo’ on early progressive house label Guerilla. Since then the pair have focused on individual careers with May often credited as the brains behind many of Sasha’s productions including his biggest hit ‘Xpander’.
Adam Freeland - GU 32 Mexico
May 26, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
Breaks pioneer Adam Freeland mixes up rock, breaks, house and minimal on the latest Global Underground volume. GU 32: Mexico hits shelves in June. Freeland has been championed as a breaks DJ since the mid-nineties, especially for his genre-pioneering ‘Coastal Breaks’ volumes and nu-skool mixes ‘On Tour’ and ‘Tectonics’. But he’s also been known to mix it up. ‘Fabriclive 16′ showed he was not averse to crossing breaks with hip-hop and electro while his debut album ‘Now and Them’ brought the genre to the mainstream by flirting with rock, vocals and rap.

The Detroit soul/jazz/house producer returns with his first full length record in six years. ‘Sound Sculptures Vol. 1’ is out now. Theo Parrish makes his music hard to find – ‘Sound Signatures Vol. 1’ arrives as a pricey American import with a gatefold sleeve on 3 x 12” only. The album contains nine previously unreleased cuts, ranging from vocal tracks with live instrumentation to jazz oriented material to the rougher cut-up stuff of his early career. Listen out for the Parrish collaboration with Omar-S ‘Synthetic Flemm’, perhaps the most minimal/Detroit cut on the album.

Richie Hawtin’s minimal techno label is readying the release of a ‘best of’ compilation. Daniell Bell’s 7th City is back!

Daniel Bell relaunches his classic minimal imprint 7th City with a series of reissues this May. The news will come as a relief to Bell fans sick of playing crazy prices for the label on eBay, and with a bit of luck the next in the series might even be the rare and expensive ‘Planet Earth/Trance Missions’ from Brother From Another Planet/DBX which kicked off the label in 1992. Bell wound up 7th City in 2002, but this year the label returns to the stores, first with reissues of tracks from John Tejada (‘Timebomb’, 2002) and Claude Young as Brother From Another Planet (‘Acid Wash Conflict’, 1993) among others.
Dennis Ferrer In The House
May 12, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
As always with the ‘In The House‘ series on Defected, the release is a triple CD affair with two discs of mix and a third disc of unmixed tracks especially chosen by the artist. On the two mix CDs Dennis Ferrer swings between deep techy rhythms, soulful house and techno, while disc three includes some of Ferrer’s all-time favourites from artists such as Grace Jones, Roy Ayers and Liquid Liquid. Ferrer has been producing music for twenty years, but 2007 looks to be his best yet. He’s known for his collaborations with Jerome Sydenham (’Sandcastles’, ‘Timbuktu’) as well as last year’s biggie ‘Son of Raw’, which found its way into the record bag of Ricardo Villalobos, Ame and Ryan Elliott.
John Dahlback - Pickadoll’s
May 10, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
The prodigious 21-year-old from Sweden has notched up over 70 releases, 40 remixes and 75+ compilation appearances in just four short years under his various alias (HUG, Huggotron, Kaliber and probably others that we’re not even aware of). Not only does JD produce, but he also DJs, and his latest offering is a label mix that blends together tracks from his own imprint Pickadoll. Many of the cuts are (no surprises here) Dahlbäck productions, but there are also offerings from Özgur Can, Sébastien Léger and Zoo Brazil. Expect house, electro and electrohouse.
