Nookie - Beyond Blue
April 28, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
After being signed exclusively to Good Looking Records for the past five years Nookie (real name Gavin Cheung) has now parted company with LTJ Bukem’s record label to concentrate on his own Phuzion Records and Strictly Digital MP3 download website. True to form, Nookie has made sure his fifth album doesn’t disappoint loyal fans of that seminal jazz-atmospheric sound. Those of you who reminisce on those days, reminisce no more as ‘Beyond Blue’ proves to you why we need this in the scene. High quality production, smooth deep pads, ultra funky/jazzy basslines, organic sounds, clean and crisp snares, crystal clear samples, soulful vocals, and superlative attention to detail abound here.

Urban Tribe - Acceptable Side effects
April 20, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Labels, Releases | No Comments
Veteran producer Sherard Ingram, perhaps best (un)known as the mysterious Drexciyan DJ Stingray, drops a new full length on Rephlex. This man has, time and again, proved himself as one of the Godfathers of electronic dance music, while managing to maintain a sub-aqua profile to avoid distraction and dilution of his sound. Urban Tribe’s previous Rephlex album ‘Authorised Clinical Trials’ from summer 2006 has been widely praised: “It broods in the stereo like a cold-hearted killer; eventually jumping from the speakers, coming at you with an axe and the devil in its eye. Minimal it may be, but this album rolls heavy. Resist if you dare” (IDJ).

Meck ft Dino - Feels Like Home
April 19, 2007 | Filed Under Artists, Releases | No Comments
Nearly one year since Meck scored it large with Leo Sayer, now Dino Lenny gets on the case, featuring a big riff from Felix. Meck isn’t resting on his laurels as he goes down the same musical path again. ‘Feels Like Home’ utilises the classic riff from Felix’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’ but is light years away from what you maybe expecting. With vocals written and sung by the much underrated Dino (known to most of you as the talented Dino Lenny) and road tested by Meck on his DJ travels around the world, this is a true club monster in both its original and the mixes.

For this album, Robotnick selected 13 tracks out of the 40 he produced in the past 3 years, using almost entirely the same equipment he had in the early 80s.
